Grindelwald, Switzerland – Hiking Tours
– Glacier Village –
Tucked in a green valley at 3,458 feet, Grindelwald rests below one of Switzerland’s most emblematic sights, the Jungfrau massif, comprised of the namesake summit alongside the Eiger and Mönch, each cresting above 13,000 feet. These peaks, along with the Wetterhorn, provide a commanding mountainscape. It’s the reason why Grindelwald has become one of the most popular winter holiday destinations in the Bernese Alps. The town also claims the Alps’ first cable railway, built on the Wetterhorn in 1908, and the Top of Europe remains Europe’s highest railway station.
Less crowded in the summer, Grindelwald’s hiking trails are boasted to be 300 km (186 mi). Alpine Adventures Trails Tours offers a Grindelwald hiking trail to Mountain Lodge Faulhorn, Europe’s highest hotel at 8,796 feet when it opened in 1832. The rustic lodge is only accessible via foot and takes 2.5 hours to reach, but the 360-degree panoramic views over lakes Thun and Brienz, with the snow-capped peaks of the Jungfrau massif beyond, are worth the trek.
After this rewarding hike and others of equal grandeur, guests enjoy sitting on the hotel deck watching the setting sun illuminate the Eiger and rolling Grindelwald valley at its base.
