Murren is a car-less village with four-star accommodations is perched like an eagle’s nest atop a 2,500-foot wall overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley. At 1,650 meters (5,450 ft.), it’s the highest, continuously inhabited village in the Bern district. Accessing the town involves taking a cable car past rushing waterfalls and craggy rock faces. Along Murren’s hiking trails are numerous alpine meadows that provide views of the snow-capped peaks of the Breithorn (12,409 ft.), Tschingelhorn (11,736 ft.), Gspalthorn (11,277 ft.) and a host of others mountains that have drawn alpinists to the region since the late 1700s. Murren’s hiking trails include the North Face Trail, which tells of the region’s mountaineering history through informative markers.
One of Muerren’s top attractions is Piz Gloria revolving restaurant atop Schilthorn summit, made famous after scenes from the 1963 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service were shot here. The panorama from the top takes in alpine trifecta the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains and the Black Forest beyond.
