The mystical Isle of Skye is a beautiful place to visit any time of year. Home to a wide variety of scenic towns, villages, and hiking trails, it is one of our favorite destinations.

The town of Portee, named from the Gaelic word Port-an-Righ and translated as King’s Port, is perhaps our favorite place to set up base. Built around a scenic harbor and surrounded by wonderful natural views of high ground and cliffs, Portee alone makes the trip to the Isle of Skye worth it.

The Isle of Skye hiking trails are additional draws to this fantastic destination. Famed for its natural wonders, a few noteworthy points of interest are the Black Cuillin, the mountain range in the center of the Isle. The Black Cuillin is known for the verdant valley the Glen Sligachan between it and the Red Cuillin. The Isle of Skye is also home MacLeod’s Tables, two impressive flat-topped mountains that offer two distinct hiking experiences. Unlike the jagged peaks of the Black Cuillin, these mountains feature a gentle rise. A trip to the Isle of Skye is not complete without a visit to the otherworldly Fairy Glen. A beautiful landslip located on the western side of Trottermish at Balnacnoc (translated as Village in the hills) the Fairy Glen features small round grassy hills with lochans (ponds) in between, giving it all a truly magical feeling.
